DIY Paineland Cast Member Badges for Teacher Appreciation Week

One of my favorite little details from our Paineland Teacher Appreciation Week wasn't a giant backdrop or elaborate photo prop. It was something much smaller that our PTO board members wore throughout the week: custom Cast Member badges!

Since we were essentially turning our school into our own little version of Disneyland, I thought it would be fun for our PTO board to look the part.

I wanted our badges to feel like they belonged with the rest of our Paineland branding, while still being simple and inexpensive enough to make for everyone.

And the best part? You can easily customize this idea for your own school, organization, or event.

Supplies

To make your own Cast Member badges, you'll need:

• Free digital download of the badge template
• Cardstock
• Home laminator
• Laminating sheets
• Scissors
• Felt sheets
• Hot glue gun
• Safety pins

What Are Paineland Cast Member Badges?

I created a Disney-inspired name badge featuring our Paineland branding, then customized each one with the board member's name and city.

We wore the badges on our shirts throughout Teacher Appreciation Week, and they were such a fun little finishing touch to our Cast Member look.

They also made it easy for teachers to identify the PTO board members throughout the week.

Create Your Badge Graphic

The first step is creating the basic badge design.

I used ChatGPT to help create the original graphic, using our Paineland branding and Disneyland Cast Member badges as inspiration.

Once I had the basic design, I brought it into Canva for the rest of the customization.

Canva is where I:

• Added each person's name
• Added their city
• Created the final printable layout
• Arranged multiple badges onto one page
• Made sure everything was sized consistently

For my finished file, I arranged six badges per page.

If you're recreating this for your own school, you don't have to use "Paineland." In fact, I encourage you to change it!

You can use the same basic concept to create your own:

[School Name] + Land

If you want to change the wording, branding, colors or other elements of the graphic, you can upload the file to Canva and customize it there.

You can also use ChatGPT to help you create a completely new version for your own school-land. Give it your inspiration graphic and tell it what you'd like changed. This is especially helpful if you want your badge to coordinate with a theme you've already created.

Add Your Cast Members' Names

Once the main badge design is finished, open the file in Canva and add each person's information.

For ours, I included:

• Name
• City

I kept the information consistent from badge to badge so the finished set looked cohesive.

If you're making badges for a PTO, you could also include someone's PTO position, such as:

• President
• Vice President
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Hospitality Chair

Or you could keep it simple with just the person's name.

A Little Canva Tip

I recommend creating one finished badge first and getting the font sizes and placement exactly how you want them.

Then duplicate that badge for each person and change the information.

That way, you're not trying to individually recreate the formatting six times on every page.

Once everyone's information is entered, double-check the spelling before printing!

Print on Card Stock

When you're happy with the badges, save the finished file from Canva and print it on cardstock rather than regular printer paper.

Card stock gives the badges enough weight to hold up when laminated and makes them feel much more like an actual name badge.

I printed mine with six badges on each sheet.

Cut Out the Badges

Once printed, cut each badge out of the cardstock sheet with scissors, cutting directly along the edge of the design.

Cutting the badges out of the cardstock first—before laminating—is what makes the next step work properly.

Laminate Each Badge

Laminate each cut-out badge individually. I use a home laminator and these laminating sheets for projects like this, and I always keep them on hand for jobs like this one.

Laminating is especially helpful for something like a name badge because these were going to be worn throughout an entire week.

It protects the cardstock from:

• Wrinkles
• Spills
• Tears
• General wear and tear

It also makes the badges look much more polished.

Trim the Laminate

This step matters more than it seems.

Once each badge is laminated, cut around it again with scissors, leaving about a ¼-inch border of laminate beyond the edge of the cardstock—don't cut right up against the badge itself.

That small border keeps the laminate sealed to itself all the way around, since the laminate on the front and back need to touch and seal directly to one another rather than to the cardstock edge.

Trim too close and you risk the laminate peeling apart over time, so aim for a consistent ¼ inch on every side.

Add Felt to the Back

Now it's time to turn the laminated badge into something you can actually wear.

I cut small squares of felt and hot glued one to the back of each badge with a hot glue gun.

The felt doesn't need to cover the entire back.

A small square is plenty.

The purpose is simply to give the safety pin something to attach to without putting the pin directly through the laminated paper.

Add the Safety Pin

Once the hot glue has cooled and the felt is securely attached, push a safety pin through the felt on the back.

And that's it!

You now have a lightweight, reusable name badge that can be pinned right onto a shirt.

A custom metal badge clip would have looked and held up better in the long run, but it wasn't worth the cost for something we'd only wear for one week. This version was cheap, easy to make, and held up just fine for the whole week without any problems.

Why I Loved This Little Detail

Normally, our PTO board wears magnetic engraved name tags—they're polished and reusable, and we love them for that reason. But for Teacher Appreciation Week, it felt like a nice touch to swap them out for something that matched the Paineland theme instead.

I even had my own little mishap with mine—I forgot my badge one morning and grabbed someone else's who wasn't there that day, so I spent the whole day as "Julie." Everyone noticed pretty quickly that I had the wrong name, but hey, at least I matched!

These badges were such a small project compared with some of the giant decorations we made for Paineland, but I think that's part of what made them so fun.

We had spent so much time transforming our school into a Disneyland-inspired experience for our teachers.

The badges helped our PTO board feel like part of the theme too.

Instead of just being the people running around behind the scenes making everything happen, we got to be Paineland Cast Members for the week.

And let's be honest—if you're going to spend months planning Teacher Appreciation Week, you might as well have a badge to prove you're part of the crew!

Make Them Your Own

The best part about this project is how easily you can adapt it.

You could create badges for:

• PTO board members
• Volunteers
• Teachers
• Event staff
• Birthday party hosts
• School carnival volunteers
• Disney-themed party guests
• Team members

You could even create different badge designs for different groups.

For our Paineland week, the Cast Member badges were just one more small detail that helped everything feel intentional and connected.

And you don't need to recreate our exact design. Use the downloadable template as a starting point, change the name of your "land," customize the colors, add your own school branding and make it yours!

Final Thoughts

I love event decor that doesn't have to cost much to make a big impact, and these little Cast Member badges definitely fall into that category.

A sheet of cardstock, some laminating supplies, a little felt and a safety pin turned into a fun piece of wearable decor that helped our PTO board feel like part of the Paineland experience.

Sometimes it's the smallest details that make a theme feel complete.
